This is important because the free Flash Player is the most widely-used and often-downloaded software in world, and some folks find it easier to gain access without a download manager (Akamai/Adobe DLM), or with their own DLM, and without additional products or toolbars included.

Check your current Adobe Flash Player version: What version are you running now?

Adobe Flash Player is a cross-platform browser-based application runtime that delivers uncompromised viewing of expressive applications, content, and videos across screens and browsers. Flash is the standard for engaging PC experiences – 99% of PCs worldwide have Flash Player installed and 85% of the top 100 websites use Flash. Approximately 75% of online videos are viewed and 70% of web games are delivered using Adobe Flash technology. More than 3.5 million designers and developers use the Flash Platform to deliver expressive content and applications that run consistently across the widest reach of browsers, operating systems, and devices.

So, without further ado, here are the direct download links – just click to download and install:

What’s New in Flash Player 10.1?

Flash Player 10.1 is redesigned from the ground up with new performance, stability, and mobile-ready features, and is the first release to bring the full Web across desktops and devices. The new release delivers expressive content to personal computers, smartphones, tablets, smartbooks, and netbooks, and can take advantage of native device capabilities including multitouch, gestures, mobile input models, and accelerometer input.

New hardware acceleration support delivers smooth, high-quality video with minimal overhead to mobile devices and personal computers using audio and H.264 video decoding. Added capabilities such as Smart Rendering, Smart Zooming, Smart Seek, Sleep Mode, and Advanced Out-of-Memory Management help drive efficiency and reliability gains. And expanded options for high-quality media delivery provide new ways to deliver rich Internet experiences using HTTP Dynamic Streaming, content protection, and improved support for live events, buffer control, globalization, and peer-assisted networking.

Adobe announced their second quarter financial results yesterday and during the accompanying conference call, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen spoke about their Flash technology and how it’s doing given the recent controversy with Apple. The call transcript quotes Narayen as saying:

Enabling our customers to deliver engaging experiences across multiple devices remains a focus of the company. Today we announced availability of Flash Player 10.1 for mobile devices, which delivers on the promise of enabling access to the full web across desktops and devices. We expect millions of devices to ship with 10.1 in the second half of 2010.

Flash is strategic for Adobe because it delivers great value to our customers. Approximately 3.5 million Flash designers and developers are working with Flash-based solutions today, and their ranks grew by 59 percent in 2009. The new release of Flash Player creates a whole new sandbox for these millions of designers and developers to create next-generation content, advertising, games, applications and experiences.

We’ve already seen that those who have been using the new Flash Player on Android phones love it; and as devices start to ship with Flash during the rest of the year, those that don’t have Flash on their smartphones will wish they did.

During the subsequent Q&A session with analysts, the question came in, “are you seeing any impact on the Creative Suite business relative to the Flash and HTML5 debate?” Last month we reported here there would be “no impact,” and yesterday the CEO confirmed:

No, we really have not seen any impact on our Flash authoring business. What we are finding frankly is that we’re seeing more and more fragmented workflows as people have to author to different standards. And the demand actually on our authoring side, to be able to deal with all these disparate workflows is actually causing more attention being paid to the Creative Suite 5 features.

In fact, for CS5 products containing Flash authoring and output, we have a 22% increase in revenue over CS4 to date. And I think you’ll see probably another ten tablet-style devices that come out with different resolutions between now and holiday season, which will increase the demand for that capability within our products.

And we’ve said this multiple times, both Flash and HTML are really going to be the solution for the web. Both of them have benefits. And Adobe has had a long history of supporting both existing formats; and when the formats don’t exist, of inventing appropriate technology to enable people to deliver the kind of experience they want.

But if you think about sporting events that are happening or when you think about television, all of that’s also being streamed on the internet and frankly all of that’s in Flash. So for those who have been watching the soccer or golf, virtually all of that content is in Flash.

The press reviews of the new Flash Player 10.1 on mobile devices have been good and the demos impressive, and it’s the #1 free download on Android. At today’s Droid X launch in New York (see video interview below with Adobe, Google, Verizon, and Motorola), Google’s mobile VP Andy Rubin shared that 160,000 Android phones are now activated each day, up from a prior estimate of 100,000/day just last month. As more and more Android devices come to market, along with planned support for Flash Player on RIM’s Blackberry devices, Nokia’s Symbian and MeeGo devices, Palm’s WebOS devices, and future versions of Windows Phone, Flash’s future looks bright.

Back at the TED Conference in February, Adobe unveiled a prototype of a new digital magazine solution running on a tablet computer… The demo was built on the cross-platform (and Flash-based) Adobe AIR environment and illustrated the possibilities for magazine publishers to reach readers in new ways. The concept enabled — in digital form — the immersive content experience magazines are known for, and allowed new interactive features to stimulate reader engagement. The idea was that with the upcoming release of Creative Suite 5, publishers could use the new InDesign CS5 to create the rich media content for the new format, and then run the reader applications across a variety of device types because Adobe AIR is portable – including the iPhone and iPad through the new Packager for iPhone capability included in Flash Professional CS5…

But then in early April, just before CS5 was launched, Apple made some changes to their SDK license restricting the technologies that developers can use for their products, including Adobe Flash software… So without Flash-derived apps being approved in Apple’s App Store, would that mean the end of Adobe’s new magazine publishing initiative on Apple devices?

On the contrary actually – showing remarkable speed and resourcefulness, Adobe yesterday announced the official release of the first magazine (WIRED) and Reader application using the new format, available now through the Apple iTunes App Store:

Created with InDesign® CS5 and additional Adobe® publishing technologies, the WIRED Reader is designed to revolutionize the magazine reading experience and allows readers to immerse themselves in magazine content like never before. This Digital Publishing Solution showcases how Adobe is enabling magazine and other publishers to deliver groundbreaking experiences across tablets, smartphones and other devices. Soon, the company plans to deliver software on Adobe Labs that will help publishers to transform InDesign CS5 layouts into compelling applications like WIRED Reader. Because this digital magazine solution integrates tightly with Creative Suite® 5, publishers can expect to leverage their existing workflow investments and designer skills.

So how did they do it?

The answer is revealed by putting together the pieces from a new FAQ on Adobe’s site – in just two months Adobe reimplemented their Digital Publishing Platform to use Objective-C to support the iPad, and will continue to use Adobe AIR and Flash everywhere else:

Adobe is pursuing a multiplatform development strategy that will include Objective-C for the iPad and the Adobe AIR® runtime for the desktop and other mobile platforms. Adobe AIR is a cross–platform solution for building applications based on Adobe Flash technology. AIR 2 and Flash Player 10.1 software will deliver high performance on mobile screens and allow publishers to create engaging, standout experiences for a wide variety of devices (Android™, Windows, Linux), as well as leverage the industry-standard advertising platform built with Flash technologies.

So there you have it – showing there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and a victory for both companies really… Also exciting is the release of the new portable publishing technology this summer on the (free) Adobe Labs – software which, “in combination with InDesign CS5, will equip you to begin developing your digital publishing workflows and creating a solution similar to the WIRED Reader experience.”

[UPDATE (July 19th) – Late this summer, Adobe will release these new publishing technologies (Digital Content Bundler and Digital Content Viewer) on Adobe Labs... Publishers can add interactivity without writing code using InDesign CS5 and create monetizable digital magazines for the Apple iPad – with other platforms and devices expected in the future.]

At a west coast investor conference Monday, Adobe Chief Financial Officer Mark Garrett said he doesn’t see an impact to Creative Suite 5 adoption from the recent moves by Apple to restrict Flash development for the iPad and iPhone. And Adobe Investor Relations VP Mike Saviage asserted that HTML5 is still in its formative stages but Adobe will lead the pack for tools when it’s ready.

Highlights from the 25-minute presentation are transcribed and excerpted here:

I’m sure you read the papers – there’s a lot of press around Flash, but there’s actually also a lot of momentum with Flash as well, moving from PC to non-PC devices. We’ve announced that Flash Player 10.1, which is shipping soon, will be supported by 19 out of the top 20 smartphone manufacturers, so we’re going to be on virtually every smartphone out there. We’re very excited about Flash 10.1 and think it’s going to be a great, compelling experience for customers and a big product launch here for Adobe.

There are roughly 1.3 billion devices in the world that already have Flash in some form on mobile handsets. We think there’s 3.5 million Flash designers and developers in the world, a number that grew 59% last year over 2008. You’re going to see Flash 10.1 first on Android devices, but we’re working closely with companies like RIM for BlackBerry, Palm/HP, and others to bring that same capability to their devices.

Obviously the bar has been set by Apple with their devices, and everybody’s racing to either hit that bar or to exceed it – and every one of them is using Adobe as a differentiation because of the prevalence of Flash in the world and how people use it to create rich, engaging experiences – video being only one aspect of why Flash is used in the world. We’re on track to ship 10.1 imminently – you’ll see it at Google I/O, and in the second half of this year you’re going to start to see a lot of devices shipping with the code we’re going to deliver to handset manufacturers in the coming weeks.

[In response to a question about the impact of Apple's actions] So the question is regarding the six million creative professionals and how they weigh their decision to use our tools, given what is going on with Apple. Those six million creative professionals, they’re all going to still use our tools, even though they’re creating content for Apple. We don’t think there’s going to be an impact to our Creative Suite tools as a result of this change from Apple. What it basically means though is they have to have two workflows now – one to create content for the Apple devices, and one to create content for everything else. And I think it’s a little bit of a misconception out there is that people would not use our creative tools for Apple devices, but the truth is they will, they’re just going to have two workflows. Our customers are now challenged by having to add a different workflow, and it’s very frustrating for them because they have to add cost at a time when they’ve been trying to cut cost.

[Regarding HTML5] We’re the leading provider of HTML authoring tools for professionals with Dreamweaver, and whatever the formats of the future are, Adobe will support those, including HTML5. Adobe will be the best tool provider in the world for HTML5 content, when HTML5 is ready. The fact of the matter is it’s nowhere close to being ready today – there’s very little browser support for it and very little HTML5 content currently on the web. The issue is that HTML5 is still in the specification design stages, and we’re a long way away from getting agreement around some of the technologies within, so it’s sort of a chicken-and-egg situation. We want to help our customers get there, but it’s going to take years and not a matter of weeks or months.

The duo also offered insights on the launch of CS5 generally:

We’re going to have a tremendous product launch here in 2010 – CS5 is the largest product launch in the history of the company. We’re in the midst now of shipping every major language around the world and it’s an incredible release – if you look at the press and the reviews, they’ve all been stellar.

Again, like we’ve done with prior releases we’ve had significant performance improvements in the product, the workflow and productivity is better and better, the integration of all our products working together is better and better, and it’s going to be a very successful release.

There’s a lot of pent-up demand for CS5, if you look at the fact that due to the economy a lot of people did not upgrade to CS4… But it’s difficult for our customers to be two releases behind in the creative ecosystem, so we think more and more people will upgrade to CS5.

When we show our customers CS5, there’s many different attributes of the product that get them excited. One is the “wow” features – I’ve been at Adobe now for quite some time, and it’s been a while since we’ve seen the buzz around new features in Photoshop, new features in Illustrator, new features in InDesign – tools that millions of creative pros use every day.

So between the strong product release and the economy improving and the pent-up demand we believe that CS5 will be very successful.

And there’s momentum in other areas too, for example if you look at Acrobat, the business has picked up in the past couple of quarters and Acrobat 10 is going to launch in the second half of this year – so another major product release in 2010.

Late yesterday, in a post entitled, “CS5 Countdown is on…“, Adobe Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch wrote about the recent decision by Apple to restrict which Software Development Kits can be employed to produce iPad and iPhone apps:

So, what’s all the fuss about the Apple proposed revised SDK license?

Yesterday Apple released some proposed changes to their SDK license restricting the technologies that developers can use, including Adobe [Flash] software and others such as Unity and Titanium.

First of all, the ability to package an application for the iPhone or iPad is one feature in one product in Creative Suite. CS5 consists of 15 industry-leading applications, which contain hundreds of new capabilities and a ton of innovation. We intend to still deliver this capability in CS5 and it is up to Apple whether they choose to allow or disallow applications as their rules shift over time.

Secondly, multiscreen is growing beyond Apple’s devices. This year we will see a wide range of excellent smartphones, tablets, smartbooks, televisions and more coming to market and we are continuing to work with partners across this whole range to enable your content and applications to be viewed, interacted with and purchased.

Tune In

Creative Suite 5 is a tremendous leap forward, and I encourage you to tune into the global webcast on Monday 8am PDT and find out all the details.

In talking further about CS5, Lynch also reveals some screenshots and hints about what to expect on Monday – in particular focussing on how Adobe is incorporating social computing aspects for doing work across the network, adding more cloud-based capabilities that complement client-side software, and enabling creation of content and applications across an increasing number of screens.

You can read the rest of Lynch’s piece here.

If you search the Adobe site for CS5, you’ll find some good tidbits, particularly about Flash Pro CS5 and Photoshop CS5, but little that’s concrete on timing.

But if you look to coverage of a financial conference the CEO spoke at last week, the Wall Street Journal writes: “CS5 is slated for release in April, though Narayen wouldn’t comment on a release time frame at the conference. Narayen said Adobe will ship its new version of Flash around the same time as CS5, in the first half of this year. ‘Data points and reviews point to a really solid release’ of CS5, he said.”

So it sounds like at this point there is still no official date from the company, but the financial community (whose jobs depend on researching this type of info) is expecting it to be available in the mid-spring. And if it were to come three years after the CS3 release, and eighteen months after CS4, then it would be in the second half of April – so with any luck, not too much longer to wait…

What’s more, Adobe has historically offered a “grace period” of sorts with major product releases, wherein if you buy the current version within a certain window of the new release, you can get the current software now plus a free upgrade to the new version when it comes out. Meaning quite possibly, you could buy a CS4 product and then get CS5 later at no additional cost…

We’ll have more specifics on that program here as the CS5 release date approaches, plus full coverage of launch details, so stay tuned.
