We’ve previously covered 14 hours of free video tutorials for Creative Suite 5, plus three hours for Lightroom 3 – so here’s a chance for Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements… Below the experts share how to get started, the basics of the programs, new features, plus their favorite tips and techniques. Most of the lessons will work for either version 8 or 7. All together there is five hours of free content, spanning over 50 chapters.

The majority of the videos were produced by Lynda.com, which is another excellent source of online tutorials (some free, some paid), and just released a new app for software training on the iPhone.

Impressionist Oil Painting with Free Adobe Plug-in for Photoshop CS5

If you missed your calling as a 19th-century post-Impressionist painter, here’s your second chance… Adobe recently released the fast and free Pixel Bender Plug-in for Photoshop CS5, which adds new image processing algorithms (filters or effects) in a hardware-independent manner. There are dozens of free filters available, including one for an oil paint effect. Pixel Bender also runs cross-platform in After Effects and Flash, so all filters and their behaviors are portable among various Adobe products.

Installation of the Pixel Bender Plug-in is easy, provided you already have Photoshop CS5 installed. If you don’t yet have Photoshop CS5, you can just download the full 30-day free trial. The Pixel Bender Gallery is initially populated with 13 filters that come with with the plugin. The one we’ll focus on today is the OilPaint filter, with two video tutorials below demonstrating detailed examples of its use. The tips and techniques shared will help you use the tools to turn an ordinary photo into something special – “makes a great gift!”

Photoshop CS5 Basic and Advanced Masking Techniques

Advanced Puppet Warping with Photoshop CS5

Puppet Warp is one of the coolest new features in Creative Suite 5. Think about taking an element of your image, setting some control points, and then “physically” manipulating it in any way that you want. Obviously this works well with figures – you could swing a raised arm to a person’s side in a photo, or make a family shot a little bit tighter on the grouping… But how about other applications, like stretching or winding text or handwriting or a plant or a musical score to create new effects? Or maybe just something simpler like easily adjusting the relative alignment of the different elements in your composition. It could be anything really – a lot of new possibilities out there with this feature for superior manipulation of still images.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 Embraces HTML5 and CSS3

As reported earlier here and here, and contrary to what some rabble-rousers might want you to believe, Adobe very much wants to be a big part of the future of HTML5… As the leading provider of web development tools, Adobe needs to be the leading provider of whatever the future of web development tools is, else they lose their relevancy. And they just took a big first step with the official announcement of the free HTML5 Pack for Dreamweaver CS5, which was tipped at an Adobe Evangelist Q&A session last month…

While HTML5 and CSS3 won’t be finalized for some time, this extension provides initial support in Dreamweaver CS5 for a set of currently-implemented functions, helping you easily create HTML5 pages and CSS3 styles. It introduces great features like multiscreen preview (which lets you see what your web page will look like on phones, tablets, and desktop computers simultaneously within Dreamweaver), HTML5 and CSS3 code hinting, video and audio tag support in Live View, and even a few HTML5-compliant starter layouts to get you up and running with HTML5 layouts quickly.

If you’ve been tuned into the technology news lately, you’ll know these sorts of improvements mark a great advance for Dreamweaver users working in this fast-changing world of smartphones and other portable devices. Although their specifications are still being finalized, HTML5 and CSS3 can be used with any browser that currently supports them. The most recent versions of the leading browsers (Safari, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Chrome) support at least some (a few support many) HTML5 and CSS3 features.

Advanced Magic with Photoshop CS5’s Content-Aware Fill

There are hundreds of new features and functions in Adobe’s Creative Suite 5, but perhaps the most talked-about is Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill – which allows you to move or delete content and Photoshop will automatically and intelligently fill in the space left behind. We’ve written about it before here with the quote, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” [Arthur C. Clarke]

But does the real feature live up to its advance billing?

While it’s not perfect and doesn’t always do what you hope or imagine (after all, it’s still just a computer), generally in practice it still does amazingly well – and often unbelievably so. And we have a handful of new videos here to illustrate, thanks to Terry White and Russell Brown. The tips and techniques shared below will help you get the most out of this capability.

The first video covers the best new features in Photoshop CS5 generally, including three great examples of Content-Aware Fill in action… The second, to the right, introduces the concept of Content-Aware Rotation – magically filling in the missing parts to the background of a rotated image with Content-Aware Fill. The third one develops the technique of Wire Removal with Content-Aware Healing – easily removing unwanted lines and wires from your images. New “Puppet Warp” Photoshop CS5 (?) Sneak Peek Video

Just out: a very cool Adobe Photoshop CS5* preview demo on a new feature called Puppet Warp that lets you distort and warp images with extreme accuracy… Just set a few control points and then it becomes a breeze to precisely reposition or warp any image element – like swing a raised arm to a person’s side in a photo, wrap a rope any way you want, manipulate a puppet, stretch or wind text to create new effects, or structurally realign images with a click or drag of the mouse… What else can you think of?

Incredible convergence happening with these tools and what they can do.

Photoshop CS5 Revealed! Plus MORE Content-Aware Fill Insanity

Since our popular post Thursday with the latest “sneak peek” preview of the stunning new Content-Aware Fill (aka PatchMatch) technology in Photoshop CS5, another “insane” video has surfaced… This one comes from last week’s Photoshop World in Orlando, and shows something we still find impossible to believe.

But before we get to that, first Photoshop CS5 gets unveiled by JohnnyL!

Now, back to the latest story with Content-Aware Fill… In this next clip, three new demos are shown. First a person is removed from a scene with a click, then some graffiti is cleaned up in a snap, but the really incredible part is what they do to the photo of the woman in the swimsuit! Last week we were blown away when we saw clouds, desert ,and mountains being synthesized with simple clicks of the mouse, but here is something completely more “human” and equally amazing – meaning the technology can be used on much more than landscapes, and the possibilities really expand.

As a bonus, here’s a link to one final piece – a brilliantly-done ’spoof’ of the new Photoshop fill technology, inspired by some of the magical things we’re seeing and wondering if it could do more… It’s completely hilarious and recommended, although still wishful thinking at this point.

Word has it that apparently close to 50,000 people have already signed up to attend April 12’s CS5 worldwide launch event so far…

Insane New Photoshop CS5 Sneak Peek Video

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” [Arthur C. Clarke] — that’s what comes to mind when watching this latest preview demo from the Adobe Photoshop team… There have been several videos out on this amazing new Photoshop CS5* Content-Aware Fill (aka PatchMatch) technology, but this new one is the best. Move/remove/repair entire objects with the background automatically filling like the object was never there – jaw-dropping, really. Incredible how easy this makes it and what the possibilities could be – and thinking already of the hours it’s going to save.

The best part is about halfway the video when he makes trees and roads disappear and then creates desert and mountains and clouds and sky from seemingly out of nowhere, all with single clicks of the mouse. And just like when watching magic on TV, we found ourselves wondering if there was something going on “behind the scenes” to make it work… But let’s hope not – what do you think?

By the way, the breakthrough new technology shown here is a joint development effort between the Adobe Photoshop team and the Graphics Group at Princeton University.

Three Dreamweaver CS5 (?) “Sneak Peek” Videos

Over the past three days Adobe has quietly released several “preview” videos of future technology in Dreamweaver… Now just as with the sneak-peek Photoshop videos posted last week, there are no assurances on exactly which version of Dreamweaver or when – but considering that CS5 could be coming out fairly soon, we could be seeing some of these new technologies in CS5. But even if not, they are rather impressive…

The first video below covers a very cool new “Smart Paste” command that makes it a snap to bring vector designs (such as artwork from Illustrator) directly into HTML – as simple as copy and paste.

The second one delves into support for multiscreen authoring with HTML5 and CSS3, and so might be considered more in the “emerging” department… This one is a big challenge for designers especially as varied mobile devices become increasingly more prevalent on the web.

The last video comes from the new “CSbuzz” hub site that launched last week, and is a little tease on significant improvements when working in Dreamweaver with dynamic material such as PHP, which historically hasn’t been as handy.

Four Photoshop CS5 “Sneak Peek” Preview Videos

In recent days and weeks Adobe has been slipping out little preview videos of some of the features that could be coming in Photoshop ~~CS5~~ (well OK not necessarily “CS5” but rather “a future version of Photoshop,” is the official word… ;)

They cover new technologies for painting, coloring, selection, alignment, edge detection and masking, among others, to help save time and effort.

Adobe Creative Suite Buzz Hub

Following up to our popular post Tuesday on CS5 release timing, an alert reader discovered a new site launched yesterday morning called the Adobe Creative Suite Buzz Hub… It’s a ‘Twitteresque’ destination where you can follow and see official tweets for the products or evangelists you’re interested in. Facebook connections are there too, as well as an initial set of videos.

Thus far there are presentations on getting started with the design tool Flash Catalyst, which is new for CS5, plus Introducing BrowserLab, which allows you to easily preview and test your web pages on multiple browsers and operating systems on demand, and new script development app Adobe Story, both of which are in limited free preview. There’s also a humorous performance from Photoshop guru Russell Brown.

Adobe expects the buzz site will be a focal point for Creative Suite updates and videos going forward…
