I downloaded the latest Photoshop version 20, and tried to install it to an external clone drive, but it gives me an error 1)

I called Adobe support and they said that I need to use their CC Cloud, otherwise it will not work. I never had problems with a direct installer in all the versions I’ve had.

    So… is it true?

    • No. It’s not true.

You should also be able to install, activate, and run any CC app using the standalone installers available via direct download links above.

So what is the exact text of the message you received, word-for-word?

Also try googling that, which will often turn up a solution.

it’s free cos I did download

Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator CC2019 will not install, and give the error message “the installation cannot continue as the installer file may be damaged”. This is due to revoked or outdated certificates in the packages, which is a shame, since now Adobe wants credit card details just to try out their software.

Hi there…I don’t see Adobe XD…is it now available to download?

I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    Thank you.

You are right. I was installing on an old Window 7 machine that does not have an internet connection and serves as my test bed, as I wanted to see if it will run on older specs. After noting your comments, I tried it on a newer Window 10 connected PC, and the software installed without any issues. Maybe it is a sign of the times, but I think making internet connection mandatory just to install software is a bit over the top.

In my search last night (before posting here), I came across a website that mentioned the root certificate issues. Basically, I type “the installation cannot continue as the installer file may be damaged” and this site came up. It offers a solution to update the root certificate on the machine (not the software) and it worked! The software installed without internet connection! This was done on my test bed which I then rolled back, as I am certainly not comfortable installing strange root certificates on my machine, so this is not a viable secure option. Nonetheless, it does serve to illuminate somewhat how Adobe makes the internet connection requirement mandatory.

    • Be careful. It sounds like you inadvertently installed an illegal Adobe hack or crack from the dark corners of the Internet. That’s very dangerous – not just because it’s illegal, but because you have no clue what it could do and how badly it can mess up your system (and steal your personal data & privacy):

A Word on Software Piracy – “If It Sounds Too Good To Be True…”

Be sure to check your system very very carefully for viruses, keygens or trojans… Run with multiple different virus scanners and security packages, the best you can find.

As for the CC tools and the Internet – you need to be connected briefly to initially activate the software installation, is all. You do not need a constant or ongoing Internet connection to use the Creative Cloud applications… There is only the periodic requirement to check the current status of your subscription, to make sure it is still valid.

Once Creative Cloud is installed and you are signed in, you should be able have that computer fully offline for up to 99 days + one month, for annual subscriptions:

CC Internet Connectivity, Offline Grace Period, and Reminders

If such checks never happened, then obviously someone could sign up for their first month of Creative Cloud, then disconnect their computer, cancel their plan, and never pay again… So that wouldn’t really make sense.

    Hi I downloaded Adobe Fuse
To run the file you said to use the folders from the InDesign installer
    Fuse installed
    But not running
    My Windows is version 10
    what do I do?
    Thank You

    • You said that Fuse successfully installed, but won’t run – is that correct?

Sorry, not sure why – could you please share more details about the issue? Do you receive any error or message? If so, what is the exact text of that? Often googling that will turn up a solution.

    @ProDesignTools
Thank you for your concern, and as mentioned I already rolled back my test bed to its previous state, as I was not comfortable in installing strange root certificates on my machine.

Nonetheless, it was just root certificates, and not a software or hack. It was a simple executable archive file, and once decompressed, the main content is “roots.sst” which can be opened with certmgr.msc, which show the contents to be just root certificates.

I am highlighting this NOT because I am advocating its use, as I myself was not comfortable and rolled back my test bench to get rid of it, but to highlight the mechanism which Adobe uses it to prevent installation without internet connection. This probably has no practical implications, but a bit of interesting information, that’s all.

As for using an internet connection to police the trial period, I am old enough to remember using shareware with built-in timers that deactivate or limit the software after a certain period, i.e., 30 days, so as far as I am concerned, that is not a valid reason. However, with Creative Cloud being a subscription service, I guess it is.

I am just not keen on using a subscription service. My main gripe is not the software, but the files it created. I have a lot of work files, created from a multitude of software of all different versions throughout the years. Every now and then, I need to open one of these files to use its content. Anyone remember Pagemaker? I can open these files because I still have a Pagemaker, and I cannot find any recent publishing software that will import old Pagemaker files.

With subscription service, how do I open these files 10 years from now, if the software or even the company no longer exists? Remember Pagemaker pretty much does not exist now. There is simply no guarantee.

Adobe has to find new revenue streams, and that is their prerogative. Whatever my argument, it is certainly not going to sway them one way or the other. With any new business models, some of us are going to fall on the wayside because we are unable to follow.

    • Hey Kenny,

In general, newer versions of Adobe apps can open projects or files created in older versions… So, for example, Photoshop CC 2019 can open .PSD files that were saved from Photoshop CS3 in 2007 (or older).

Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) File Compatibility Guide

As for how to open your files at some point in the future if you no longer have a CC subscription? Well, the free level of Cloud membership (which you retain permanently at no cost) will allow you to open, display, and manipulate files in some of the most common Adobe formats (types including .PSD, .AI, .INDD, etc).

Similarly, you can use the preview and display capabilities of Adobe Bridge CC, which is free for everyone, for life.

There also exist third-party utilities like XnView (free), which will read and write Photoshop .PSD files, and also opens Adobe Illustrator .AI files. ID Util (also free) will read and display any InDesign or InCopy file. Like Photoshop’s published .PSD format, Adobe PDF is another publicly-documented specification, and various programs can read and write those files.

Adobe will also be resetting a new round of free CC trials at least once every year that will work fully and open your files for 7 days. So if your paid membership has expired, then short-term opening or editing your files down the road could be as simple as just grabbing the latest free trial and firing it up.

And then there’s always a Creative Cloud month-to-month membership available if you want to do more intensive work, for as long or as short as that is. You would pay only for the months you needed to.

Bottom line, there should never a case where you are denied access to open your work or files – it’s just that it may not necessarily be 100% free guaranteed, depending on what you want to do with them. But obviously the maintenance of all professional software in working order has costs and tradeoffs, even for standalone perpetual tools.

    Yes, fuse does not run
    The installation process was good
But after installation, it does not run with double clicks
I do not receive any messages or errors

  13. mark

many thanks for these download links.

  14. Martijn

I don’t know much about the other tools, but the link for Lightroom 8 is severely outdated now. It’s linking to 8.0, which is the “RTM” release. There have been a couple of updates in the meantime.

    • Well, we wouldn’t say “severely outdated” – that seems a bit of an overstatement. All of the versions here above are from within the past seven months – and these are what Adobe has made available at present…

We are following up with them to see if direct download links to further CC 2019 updates will be published going forward. But at this time, however, these installers are the most recent you can get.

    @ProDesignTools

    The message says:

“Sorry, installation failed. An unknown error has occurred. (Error Code: 1)”

  16. Greg R

Besides the error 1 issue, It looks like the direct download link does include Creative Cloud desktop. Is there a way to download with the CC?

  17. Greg Rutman

This message is for the moderator of this website. Is there any way you can stop your website from sending me hundreds of emails. Now every day. It’s very annoying, why is this happening? I did not request to notify me.

    Thanks.

    • Hello again Greg,

When leaving a comment on our site, there is an optional checkbox to “Notify me of follow-up comments via email”… According to our records, you checked that box for two posts that get a lot of comments (this one, plus another from 2016).

Within every comment email that you receive, there is a link you can use to unsubscribe yourself for that post, if you wish. We’ve just done that for you, so you should receive no further comment notification emails for either article.

  18. Greg Rutman

Thanks for doing that. and you are correct I did check to notify me but I am using not the email I used a few years ago. I am using a new email. And mass emails I got to an older account that I have not used for years. That’s why it was shocking for me, why would I get so many emails on the old email account.

    The old account is webwiz.

    • Hmm. Well, our records show you using your “webwiz” email seven times in comments on our site since last October 2018… (and thanks for reading & commenting!)

However, we don’t show that email address still active to receive any further comment notification emails, so it must be that you did unsubscribe yourself by clicking on those links.

Apologies for the inconvenience, and thank you for writing.

  19. Greg Rutman

Thanks for your help. You might be correct that I may have used it last year, and then stopped as I am now using my webwiz email for video production only.

So question, if my two emails were unsubscribed and if I post a question on the newest email, will ‘Notify me follow-up comments via email’ only on the specific article work, or I need to use another email?

    Thanks.

    • Unless you check the “Notify me of follow-up comments via email” box again when commenting in the future, you will not receive further email notifications for any other comments other than when your own comments are approved and published.

And the ‘Notify’ function operates individually and separately for each article on our site.

Hope that helps clear things up!
