  1. Hi there, I’m very interested on having a copy of the new CS5, but I’m not a student or a teacher. Can I ask my friend who’s a teacher to buy for me?

  2. Would it be cheaper to wait and buy adobe cs6 student edition when it comes out, or buy the adobe cs5.5 student edition now and get the upgrade when it comes out?

    Reply
    • Great question Larry, but we can’t say for sure because Adobe has not released any pricing yet on CS6, and they won’t do so until it is released

They have made some changes recently to their upgrade policies, so we don’t know for sure yet if Student & Teacher Editions will continue to be offered in the same form for CS6, though we hope and presume they will.

But if it works like it did for the past few releases, then the pricing (upgrade or full) would be similar to what it is now. If so, then it would be more expensive to buy CS5.5 now and upgrade later to CS6 vs. waiting and buying CS6 by itself. But on the other hand you get the benefit of using the software now versus having to wait for months more.

What some people do is download the free trial and run that fully-working for 30 days, and then see where you are at that time.

  3. Hi,

Are teachers at [private] schools that are members of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) eligible for the student/teacher discount?

    Thanks,
    James

  4. So just to be sure. I’m a full time Tafe student. If I submit my student ID card I can continue to use my Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended version indefinitely. It doesn’t stop working when I graduate?

  5. Beste,

Hopelijk kunnen jullie me raad geven!

    Vriendelijke groeten,
    Goedele

  6. Hi,

I just went back to tafe part time, would I be able to get the discount again or not? Several years ago I was a full-time student so I could get it but I am doing a different course part time this time around.

    • Good question Daniel – but whether full-time student or part-time student, you can still be eligible if you’re enrolled!

Taking even a single course at your local community college could potentially qualify you to buy the discounted Student Editions – provided that your college, university, or school (even homeschool) meets Adobe’s academic criteria

  7. Hello, I attend Liberty University online, do I qualify for the student and teacher version. We do not have a picture id card, but a student id number, will that still qualify?

  8. Hi, I would like to know if when you buy the student and teacher cs5 program, is it the photoshop extended software or the regular cs5 – because i see that they are different and i would like to buy it for my son since he will start to learn about design in high school now.

So please tell me is it the extended version or the regular photoshop that we can buy with the teacher and student discount?

  9. Hi, My son wants to take a Graphic Design course online from the Technical college in our town. The course uses the Photoshop CS5. Would he be able to get the student edition to use for this class?

    Reply
    • No Maria, there’s no difference in features or functionality – and the student editions never expire, plus they can be used for commercial purposes…

Actually there is one difference. What commercial customers get for $699 is Photoshop CS5 Standard. What education customers get for $199 is Photoshop CS5 Extended – so that’s actually better than Standard.

  10. Will I be able to use it on both my laptop as well as my desktop computer like the standard license?

“Student & Teacher Edition software may be used on your privately-owned computer only.”

Not sure if that means I can’t install it on my work computer or I can’t install on my work computer as well as my secondary computer.

  11. My apologies, just scoured through the comments and found the answer (which is yes, as long as both computers aren’t being used at the same time).
Glad I can find the information here.

    Thank you!

    • Hi Duncan, that’s close… You can only run the student editions on privately-owned computers. If you want to run Adobe software on a computer that’s owned by a business, then you’d need to purchase (or upgrade to) a regular commercial version.

However, you should be okay to use your academic version for commercial purposes provided it remains on your personally-owned system.

And yes, it’s correct in any event that you can only run the software on one of those computers at a time.

Does that help clear things up?

  12. Hello, I started to study graphic design in Canada and I want to buy the student version CS5. Subsequently, I want to make contracts was self-employed. Can I use the student version even if I earn money with my contract was self-employed? And is it valid in Canada? thank you

  13. I recently purchased a Student & Teacher version of Adobe CS5. Verifying that I was a full-time student was relatively easy once the webpage loaded. They seem to verify through a partner site (identit-e.com or something like that). They ask for the user’s name, school information (including state and city), and they ask you to enter your email. If you use your school email, you get verified more quickly. It was pretty simple – they sent me the serial number that night.

It looks like you can purchase the Student & Teacher version as long as the user him/herself is a student or teacher. The school email seems to be a key factor – once you have that, you should be set.

    • Those are all great points Ruth – thanks for sharing them, and describing your experience! Yes, it’s usually pretty straightforward, and Adobe says validation usually takes 2 business days – and in the meantime you can download, install, and run the free trial to get started immediately with your software, then convert it over to permanent once your valid serial number arrives.

  14. I am employed by a Jr/Sr High school as a member of the staff- does this qualify to purchase the Student & Teacher version? I do have an ID card and I do have voided paychecks. Thanks!!

  15. so if i buy the student version, when the upgrade comes out, will it upgrade the version to the pro or keep it as a student version.

    Reply
    • Hello Ben, once you buy the student edition, it always stays the student edition.

However, depending on when CS6 comes out, you may later qualify for a free upgrade to a CS6 student version, if Adobe offers a “grace period” when the new products are announced.

If they don’t officially offer a grace period, then you can still use their Software Exchange Policy to return it and get a newer version within 30 days of your purchase.

  16. I am about to undertake an distance Education course with the photography institute (www.thephotographyinstitute.com.au)

As this is not a standard TAFE or University, i was wondering whether I could apply for the student discount for CS5?

  17. Hi,

I’m currently a student and plan to buy the creative suite at a student discounted price.

    I have two questions.

When I graduate, is it possible to either upgrade the Creative Suite software with a non-discounted version and/or can I upgrade an individual program, i.e. just Photoshop (full price-non student version), without having to buy the Creative Suite upgrade software.

    many thanks.

    Reply
    • Hi TU, thanks for your question. After you graduate you can continue to use the same student edition you purchased, or you can upgrade to a future commercial version at Adobe’s regularly-discounted upgrade price

But one thing you can’t do – whether student or commercial – is upgrade from a suite edition back down to an individual application like Photoshop, or InDesign, etc.

You can upgrade from a point product to a suite, or from a suite to a suite, but not from a suite to a point product. See the Creative Suite FAQ under “Am I eligible for upgrade pricing from a previous Creative Suite edition to a standalone CS component?”

Does that clear it up hopefully?

  18. I’m taking some courses in Adobe soon and qualify for the education edition of web premium. Not sure my laptop can handle the software though.

First, I’d like to know what there differences are between the normal and education editions. Second, if it doesn’t work on my laptop, can I exchange it for another if I end up buying a Mac?

Only concern I have is that I may not be able to purchase a new computer within the 30-day return window.

    Reply
  19. That does help. Thank you. But since I’m unfamiliar with both the software and MACs, is there one OS that’s better suited for web/app development than another? If I have to buy a new computer, I have no idea what to get to be effective in this field.

    • Great Rick. Well, as far as Creative Suite software is concerned, it will perform functionally the same on either Windows or Mac… Same features and everything.

So Adobe itself isn’t really a factor and it’s really more a question of which environment you prefer, what other applications or software you want to have around you, relative performance of the system choices, cost, and so on. We use mostly Windows here at the office and are comfortable with it, but there are plenty of other shops which are Mac-only.

  20. Quick question! I have two macs, a desktop + a macbook. If I buy the mac student license am I allowed to install it on both?? Or do I have to pick one?

    Thanks!

  21. I just installed a student version of CS5.5 Production and the effects list are 1/4 of the list I saw on another person’s.

Where are the rest of my effects then? I think I was gypped, and no, this is not third-party add-on plug-in effects, it is on the Adobe site and their list is much longer than mine.

    Reply
    • Welcome Gerald, Adobe’s student editions are functionally and feature-identical to the regular versions, so could you be a bit more specific? Perhaps post (or link to) some of the list you’re talking about – what you have vs. what you saw?
