  1. Thanks a lot. It’s sometimes difficult to find out exactly what’s new with Adobe, so I appreciate the review plus chart with the different versions.

I’ve still been limping along on v.7 so will probably upgrade.

    • Hey there Eduardo, good to see you again… There are some nice new additions to the Editor (and elsewhere) as detailed above, but arguably not as momentous as what was added in version 9. So, if you need or would benefit from version 10’s new features, then it’s something to consider – especially since Adobe has brought back the upgrade pricing discount.

Otherwise, if you’re coming from a version earlier than PSE 9, we think the combination of what was added in 9 + 10 is compelling. As Computerworld wrote:

“Should you upgrade to Elements 10? If you just do basic editing – or already have version 9 and don’t feel an urgent need for a rule-of-thirds overlay, text-on-a-path, or guided background blur – the editor alone may not be enough of a change to justify an upgrade. However, if you’ve got an older version that doesn’t yet have the content-aware retouching and layer masks – and you’re advanced enough in editing that you’d use such tools – it’s probably worth moving up.

If you’ve got a lot of photos imported into the Elements Organizer but haven’t gotten around to tagging them yet want to be able to find images with certain things in them, the smart object search with intelligent duplicate detection may be worth the upgrade price.”

And as another independent reviewer put it:

“Lots of Power for a Low Price: Elements is still the strongest software out there in its price range.”

  2. I just got a new iMac 10.7.2
Is it compatible with Photoshop Elements? Can I take an image (e.g. sculpture) draw around it, make a work path, and drag it onto another image (site), as I have been doing with my Photoshop CS?
    thanks

  3. I have Photoshop Elements 4.0 (yes, I know I need an upgrade especially since it conveniently stopped working this week). My question is about the Photoshop Elements 10 Plus–what is the big draw? I can’t get enough detailed information about the benefits. Ideas?

And can I upgrade to Photoshop 10 Plus at a reduced price, or is the reduction only in the upgrade to the Photoshop 10 normal (which exists)?

    Thanks

    • Welcome Erin, and thank you for your question. Adobe’s Plus add-on is an extra option that gets you 20GB of online storage with automatic syncing and backup of your photos and videos, plus exclusive access to fresh libraries of how-tos, seasonal artwork, themes, effects, Online Albums, and more.

And yes, if you own any previous version of Photoshop Elements (no matter how old), you qualify for the discounted upgrade price to PSE 10.

      Hope this helps!

  4. Greetings… Has the color bit ratio changed? If I’m remembering correctly Elements 8 works off an 8-bit ratio compared to Photoshop’s 16-bit.

    Thanks,
    Joe

  5. If I buy Photoshop 10 can I use it on two different computers? Or do I have to buy one for each of my computers? Or do I get a CD with the program?
    Thanks

  6. Why is it that I can not click on a picture file and have all of the pictures show, so that I can choose which picture I want to edit ? Instead I get some mickey mouse icon with number of picture, no clue what it is !! In corel I click on a file and all my pictures show up in my work area so I can see what I want to work on with a glance.

Elements 9/10 is not at all user friendly !!!

  7. Does the Photoshop Elements 10 have the healing brush tool and the stamp tool that are on Photoshop 7 and above? I use those most often.

    That information would be helpful.

    Thanks.

    • Welcome Laura, Photoshop Elements can’t do CMYK natively. There is at least one “hack” that will allow you to do CMYK with older versions of PSE, but it needs to be purchased and is rather awkward and laborious to use – also, without a way to softproof you’re likely to get pretty funky results anyway. CMYK capability is one of the more advanced features Adobe left out of Elements to keep the price down. The full Photoshop is the tool most use when they need to send image files for professional printing.

You could ask your printer what they would charge to do it for you, if you don’t have access to Photoshop or have all the information needed to do the thing properly. Or just request and find some way or somewhere to deliver RGB instead, if the fees are exhorbitant.

If it’s one-time sort of thing, the place to go would be someone who has the immediate ability (such as Kinko’s or a print house), or download the free 30-day trial of Photoshop CS5 and do the conversions you need.

  8. I have just purchased Elements 10 but can’t get it to load. I am running Windows 7. Could this be a problem? The booklets and information sheets that have accompanied the program do not specify which operating system should be used.

    • Greetings Pat – Windows 7 should be no problem at all, it should run fine according to the minimum system requirements – you might want to make sure about the other computer specs there though.

If you’re having trouble loading from the discs for some reason, you can try downloading the free trial instead and then converting that to permanent by entering your purchased serial number. The reason that might work better is because the trial software is newer and completely up to date, whereas the discs were as of when they were manufactured.

      Hope this helps!

  9. I am trying to load Elements 10 and am a little confused. Does only one disk load? What are all of the other disks for and when do I use them? I assumed I would have to load all of them in order to get the program to work.

    • Hey there Juli, the boxed Elements 10 software ships “multi-platform.” What this means is half of the included DVD’s actually are for Windows and the other half for Mac OS… You may only need one set depending on which computers you have and how many machines you’re installing on.

Don’t know if you have Premiere Elements, but if so then one of the discs contains the “Additional Content” which is not required (is optional) but nice to install if you want to.

Basically, just follow the instructions given for your operating system and you’ll make sure to get everything installed that needs to.

  10. I haven’t purchased a new Photoshop programme since PSE5 and now want to upgrade. What is the difference between PSE10 and the Premiere edition? Not sure which I should be buying.

    Reply
    • Sure Karen – Photoshop Elements is for editing and managing your photos & images, whereas Premiere Elements is for editing and managing your videos. Adobe heavily discounts the bundle containing both products, and if you get both, then they work together with a common Organizer feature…

PSE 10 contains “elements” of the capabilities of the full Photoshop CS5, while PRE 10 is derived from Premiere Pro CS5.

      As Adobe puts it:

Q: What’s the difference between Adobe Premiere Elements and Adobe Photoshop Elements?

A:With Adobe Photoshop Elements software, you can organize, edit, create, share, and help protect your digital photos. With Adobe Premiere Elements software, you can organize your video clips and create, share, and help protect your home movies. Both products offer a powerful, easy-to-use Organizer – the hub of your video and photo experience – that lets you organize all your media in one place.

  11. It’s hard to work on photos in PSE because it’s too dark; in PSE 7 I could change it in Preferences>General, but in PSE 10 I can’t find where to do this.

  12. I have Photoshop Elements 6 and it drives me crazy. The layers change when I don’t want them to, i.e after making an adjustment on a second layer it automatically switches back to the Background layer.

But worst of all the Levels and Hue/Saturation remain at the last settings used (I have to zero all the colours before making the alterations I want).

My question please is do these annoying features still happen on Elements 10?

  13. I’m sorry but it seems impossible to download the 30-day trial Elements 10, all goes OK till the Camera Raw bit then the time to download just keeps going up, I’ve tried twice & gave up when it said the download time would be 632 minutes!

I seriously want to change the Photoshop Elements 6 that I have because of the cranky way the settings remain as I last used them – this is ridiculous & never happened on the wonderful old Photoshop 7 I used to use on my old Mac but won’t run on the Snow Leopard OS now unfortunately. I would very much like to try Elements 10 but I’m reluctant to just buy it in case it is just as bad.

Is there any way to contact Adobe directly with my question & concerns? Or how to download the trial software?

Lastly has anyone else ever complained about this problem?

    Reply
    • Not a problem Phil. Some people do have difficulty with the Adobe Download Assistant (ADA) that they normally use. However, we have all the direct download links for the Elements 10 trials that might work better for you… So give those a try instead.

However even if you can’t download or run the free trial for PSE 10, you’re still OK. That’s because Adobe has a 30-day money-back guarantee policy. So if you have any issue or don’t want to keep the software for any reason, you can always return it direct to Adobe for a refund.

      Hope this helps!
